The declared aims of the annual specialist forum Mainz Design Discussions are to represent the tasks and sphere of activity of design, to explain mechanisms, to stimulate people to reflect and exchange experiences.

Since 2002 a range of events have been initiated in cooperation with the Ministry for Economy, Transport, Agriculture and Viticulture of Rheinland-Pfalz, which are devoted to design-policy questions.
Each year three to four experts from various sectors (design, economy, education, science and the media) are invited to Mainz to address the core questions of a ground-breaking issue, to represent their own experience and approaches and to jointly discuss this with the audience.
The Mainz design discussions are aimed at companies from the economy and the creative sector, from culture as well as designers and students.

New impulses and interesting insights

A key factor for the success of the half-day symposium is selecting the right topic. It is diverse and current and is also relevant to both designers and potential customers. The speakers think outside of the box and open the way for new impulses.
The focus is on asking key questions and highlighting different sides of important aspects of the design process – also from the outside.

With this range of events Mainz has gained a high-quality forum for professional exchange. Entrepreneurs from diverse sectors, representatives of public and corporate-friendly institutions as well as interested parties from the environment of the University outside of the region all meet together here.
The specialist articles are issued in a publication. The Mainz design discussions are organised by the Rheinland-Pfalz design forum descom in cooperation with the Ministry for Economy, Transport, Agriculture and Viticulture of Rheinland-Pfalz and with the support of the Institute of Media Design of the Mainz University of Applied Sciences and the involvement of the Council for Design.
